"Beijing Key Laboratory of Animal Models of Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases" involves in China's major new infectious diseases, especially the integration of laboratory animals and agent resources. Through research and analysis of highly consolidated infectious disease model, a multi-species, multi-disease, multi-dimensional and comprehensive laboratory for animal model research of infectious diseases has been established integrating a set of non-human primates, rodents and other characteristics species. The main research direction is to integrate the resources of various animals and strains, establish a large-scale, standardized and systematic animal model research platform for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, in order to solve the bottleneck problem in the research of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, and provide evaluation criteria for the evaluation of anti-infective drugs and vaccines. Through the integration of animal models of pathological analysis and behavior analysis, and a series of key technologies of gene engineering technical services and laboratory animal image analysis, animal model repository has formed with scale, standardization and systematization of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, hepatitis, highly pathogenic flu, and severe emerging and reemerging infectious diseases with potential input risk, in order to improve the level of system analysis model and service ability, to realize the standardization of the animal model to evaluate technical indicators for infectious disease research, drug and vaccine evaluation model. It is built into the international level of biological safety laboratory base, technology and resource sharing base and biological safety personnel training base.

The laboratory is supported by the Institute of Laboratory Animal Sciences, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and is positioned to provide animal model resources for life science and medicine research, support for animal analysis technology resources and theoretical basis for comparative medicine, as well as cultivate professional talents in comparative medicine. At present, it is the only scientific research support institution of which main tasks are laboratory animal sciences and comparative medical research, teaching, supply and technical service. The laboratory has 22 staff, including 10 scientific researchers with the title of deputy senior high or above.

The research contents mainly include: (1) to build and perfect China's only animal model resource bank for infectious diseases, and improve the systematization, standardization and supporting capacity of the resource bank; (2) establish specifications and standards of technical indicators for animal model creation, analysis and evaluation; (3) expand the resources of infectious disease susceptible animals and immunological research engineering animals, which are scarce in China, and lay a foundation for the sustainable development of infectious disease research in China; (4) establish a biosafety guarantee system for animal platforms; (5) to improve the external service capacity of the evaluation system for drugs, vaccines and antibodies.

Beijing Key Laboratory of Animal Models of Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases used the first mouse model of H7N9 avian influenza virus independently established in China to study the therapeutic and preventive effects of the human-derived monoclonal antibody of H7N9 independently developed in China, and evaluated the biological half-life of the antibody in a mouse model. This study provides data support for the transformation of antibody development into clinical applications, and results were published in Nat Commun in 2015. Meanwhile, further studies on the series of antibodies related to H7N9 were published in J Virol in 2015. In addition, establishment and application of animal model repository of the laboratory for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, highly pathogenic avian influenza, SARS, hand-foot-and-mouth disease and other major infectious diseases won the second prize of the Ministry of Education of science and technology progress prize in 2015, marking the key laboratory of infectious diseases work was recognised by the Beijing municipal government and the Ministry of Education, at the same time, these results obtained will further promote infectious disease research work of the key laboratory.

The animal model of infectious disease is the supporting condition for the basic research, diagnosis and detection, monitoring and early warning and evaluation of prevention and treatment strategies. With the purpose of the major infectious diseases and a variety of new infectious diseases harmful to people's health in our country, such as SARS, AIDS, highly pathogenic flu, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, hand, foot and mouth disease, respiratory syndrome in the Middle East (MERS), hemorrhagic fever, etc., Beijing Key Laboratory of Animal Models of Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases set up a intensive, large-scale, standardized and highly efficient technology platform for laboratory research of infectious disease animal models.
