Pathogen Laboratory Research Center

Comprehensive Introduction:

The Institute has more than 30 years of experience in the study of infectious diseases since 1986 and emerging infectious diseases since 2003. In 2012, the Institute integrated the research group of infectious diseases and established the Pathogen Laboratory Research Center (hereinafter referred to as the Pathogen Center), which became one of the four research centers of the Institute. Relying on the united laboratory of emerging and remerging infectious diseases jointly established by animal model research of emerging and remerging infectious diseases of the Institute, Beijing municipal key laboratory of infectious diseases, and national key laboratory, emerging infectious diseases of the university of Hong Kong, pathogen center focuses on creating animal models of infectious diseases, the innovation research on infectious diseases, fully supportting comprehensive prevention and control of infectious diseases and scientific research of our country and the world.

Target Localization:

The pathogen center is the only research center in China with the purpose of creating animal model resources for infectious diseases and leading biomedical research technology, and strives to become the international first-class integrated research institution for animal models of emerging and major infectious diseases and comparative medicine.
 

Staff Composition:

There are 30 scientific and technological personnel in the center, including 7 with senior titles (5 under the age of 40) and 11 with doctor's degree. It is a young, energetic, professional and high-level scientific research team. There are 7 PI staff in the pathogen center, who come from different majors such as pathology, virology, laboratory animal sciences, immunology, comparative medicine, veterinary medicine, etc., with interdisciplinary and complementary advantages. The pathogen center has 3 doctoral supervisors, 4 master supervisors, and 5-8 graduate students annually.

Research Group Setting:

According to the possible direction of major infectious diseases and emerging infectious diseases in China, the pathogen center now has 7 research groups, namely, AIDS research group, viral hepatitis research group, respiratory virus research group, enterovirus research group, vector virus research group, bacterial disease research group and new disease origin research group. Host susceptibility research group is under preparation. Under the leadership of the Institute and under the coordination of the center, all research groups work closely to provide new animal models of infectious diseases and key technologies for downstream research units, and carry out scientific research cooperation with researchers inside and outside the Institute to serve the comprehensive prevention and control of infectious diseases.

Main Achievements:

To reverse the resource scarcity of domestic infectious  diseases animal models, the world's largest animal models of infectious diseases repository was built in the pathogenic cente, containing 96 species of animal models, covering 100% of infectious diseases appeared in the country and overseas in recent 15 years, the largest number of pathogenic agents in the world, and providing a key tool for our country and the world of infectious diseases prevention and control.

Based on the contribution of pathogen center in the field of animal models of infectious diseases, pathogen center has successively undertaken the project of "Laboratory Animal Technology Platform" of the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases of National Science and Technology Major Special Infectious Diseases in the 11th five-year plan, the 12th five-year plan and the 13th five-year plan. In the past five years, the pathogen center has applied for and undertaken 27 international cooperation projects, national projects, provincial and ministerial projects, and university-level projects, with a total expenditure of 42.02 million yuan.

The center also actively participates in the teaching, popularization and training of infectious diseases and biosafety. It is responsible for or participating in the compilation of professional or popular science books such as Animal Models of Common and Emerging Infectious Diseases, Modern Life and Biosafety, and Zoonoses around Us. They actively participated in the talent training program of Chinese Association of Laboratory Animal Sciences, and trained a large number of animal laboratory biosafety personnel
